              Men and Women in Academia

This webinar was held on Tuesday, May 19, 2020

Our intent for this webinar was to engage a panel of scholars in a moderated discussion on the distinct challenges that women perceive in their academic careers, how these perceptions affect their professional relationships with their male colleagues, and how male scholars perceive the roles of female scholars in academia. We hope to discuss a range of issues, including balancing personal/family/community responsibilities alongside professional goals and commitments, working in a female- vs. male-dominated department, having male vs. female administrative leaders, and navigating politics in both formal and informal academic and professional communities. Our moderators facilitated a conversation about where the gender divide continues to operate, where and how we have made progress in this regard as a field, and how we might best continue to move forward in addressing these challenges to offer men and women a level playing field –  ideally through a combination of individual and systemic solutions.

Defining What Success Means for You – and Making it Happen

              This Webinar Panel was held on February 4, 2020 at 3:00pm GMT/ 10:00am EST/ 7:00am PST

The academy is a professional context where there are few limits on the ways that scholars may choose to contribute to research, education, practice, and society at large. There are equally many ways that we as scholars define success for ourselves and forge our career paths and measure our accomplishments accordingly. It can be all too easy to single out the scholars we know as “stars” and to use their achievements as measuring sticks for our own career decisions, successes, and shortcomings. Our goal for this webinar is to cultivate a healthy and balanced approach to what success means and how its definition might also change over time.

We invited four women scholars who have made outstanding accomplishments in their careers while embracing their own definitions of success. We hope to facilitate a discussion where other scholars feel encouraged to identify and be inspired by the successful role models around them while remaining true to their own values and priorities as they define and strive for their own versions of success.
